Sierra Canyon’s Tyler Stewart is an impact player

Share

Top quarterbacks are in demand, and unbeaten Chatsworth Sierra Canyon (13-0) has great confidence in its 6-foot-4 senior quarterback Tyler Stewart.

He has passed for 32 touchdowns with only two interceptions going into Friday’s CIF state championship Division IV bowl game against Le Grand at 4 p.m. at the Home Depot Center.

Add 2,243 yards passing, plus 443 yards rushing, and you begin to understand the impact Stewart makes.

Coach Jon Ellinghouse built his offense around the sturdy, dependable Stewart.

“Tyler is what every coach wants his quarterback to be,” he said. “He’s a smart kid that works extremely hard as far as his knowledge of the game. He’s a big, strong-armed kid.

“But more importantly, he’s a great-hearted kid and to have him in this game is something I’m very proud of. He deserves it, and I think he’s going to represent the Southern Section well.”

Double duty

Mike Lamb, a former USC lineman, will be a commentator for three of the bowl games this weekend for Time Warner Cable.

But one game he won’t be doing is the La Mesa Helix-Loomis Del Oro Division II final on Saturday. His son, Logan, is a starting lineman for Del Oro.

Lamb will probably be more nervous watching his son than analyzing the games on television.

TV information

All five bowl games will be shown live on Time Warner Cable in Southern California on Channel 101 and Channel 700 HD. Jim Watson, Randy Rosenbloom and Neil Sika will be doing the play by play.

Cox and Charter are also going to televise the games, but they won’t be available on DirecTV or Dish Network.

Time Warner Cable is in the first year of a 15-year contract to broadcast CIF state championships.

The games will be also streamed live on the Internet https://www.socal101tv.com/prepsports/.

On crutches

Alex Ball, Westlake’s standout kicker, will be on the sideline for Saturday’s Open Division final against Concord De La Salle, but he’ll be using crutches. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Oaks Christian last week and is scheduled to undergo surgery Dec. 23.

Ball is one of the finalists for the Herbalife 24 Chris Sailer Award recognizing the nation’s top high school kicker. The winner will be announced on the same night at L.A. Live. His mother and brother will attend the banquet. Ball has made 19 field goals this season.
