Dodgers get past Chicago Cubs, 2-1
AT THE PLATE: Leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal had two hits, as did non-roster infielder Eugenio Velez, who had to be removed in the seventh inning because of a sprained ankle. Hector Gimenez, who has hit his way into roster consideration, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. A catcher who has spent a significant part of the spring at first base, Gimenez played left field because Manager Don Mattingly wanted to test his versatility. In the first inning, Gimenez threw out Tyler Colvin at the plate when Colvin tried to score from second base on a single by Marlon Byrd.
ON THE MOUND: Aside from the six sharp innings pitched by Chad Billingsley, the most important development might have been that Vicente Padilla threw off a mound for the second consecutive day. Padilla is three weeks removed from arm surgery and could be ready to pitch in a major league game in another month.
EXTRA BASES: Former Dodgers infielder Blake DeWitt, who is fighting for a spot on the Cubs’ roster, was one for four with a triple to raise his spring average to .170. Because DeWitt still has minor league options, the Cubs are considering sending him down.
UP NEXT: Ted Lilly faces the Chicago White Sox and John Danks at Camelback Ranch on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PDT.
