AT THE PLATE: Jeff Mathis highlighted a four-run third inning with a two-run homer, Howie Kendrick had three hits, including a run-scoring double, and Maicer Izturis doubled and scored in each of his first two at-bats. Manager Mike Scioscia said he will open the season with Izturis and Kendrick at the top of the order.

ON THE MOUND: Reliever Michael Kohn continued his impressive spring with a one-two-three seventh. The young right-hander has allowed one earned run in 10 innings, striking out eight and walking two. Jason Bulger’s eighth inning wasn’t as smooth. The right-hander gave up two runs on two hits and a walk.

EXTRA BASES: Kendrys Morales, whose rehabilitation from a broken left ankle has been slowed by soreness in the ball of his left foot, began wearing new orthotic inserts in his shoes and hopes to resume baseball activities early next week. “The throbbing has gone down a lot,” Morales said through an interpreter.

UP NEXT: Jered Weaver faces the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Jeff Marquez at 1 p.m. Saturday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.
