Dodgers lose to Arizona, Seattle in spring games

AT THE PLATE: Starting his second consecutive game after a weeklong absence from the lineup, Jamey Carroll was one for three with a walk and a run against the Diamondbacks. Aaron Miles, who is competing for a bench role, was one for four with a run. The Dodgers were limited to six hits. Against the Mariners, Juan Uribe was two for two, raising his spring average to .289. Infield prospect Ivan DeJesus Jr., who will probably be the Dodgers’ opening-day second baseman if Casey Blake is on the disabled list, was one for four. DeJesus is batting .340.

ON THE MOUND: Top prospect Rubby De La Rosa had a rough day, as he was charged with three runs and four hits in four innings against Arizona. De La Rosa replaced Tim Redding, who had to be removed in the fourth inning because of back pain. The fifth spot in the rotation is starting to look like a problem. Jon Garland is hurt. Redding might be, too. And John Ely, who will likely fill the position if neither of them is available, was rocked for six runs and eight hits in four innings against Seattle. “I kept a few pitches up,” Ely said. “If I executed a few more pitches, the line would probably be a little better.”

EXTRA BASES: An outsider to make the opening-day roster, Gabe Kapler remains a source of intrigue for the Dodgers, who like his leadership qualities. Kapler made an impression with his glove in the night game against the Mariners. From right field, Kapler threw out Adam Kennedy, who was trying to advance from second base to third in the third inning. Kapler also recorded the final out of the inning, making a diving catch to rob Josh Wilson of extra bases.
