Juan Uribe homers, doubles in Dodgers’ 5-4 win over Padres

AT THE PLATE: With opening day nearing, free agent addition Juan Uribe is starting to hit. Uribe was two for three with a home run and a double, raising his exhibition average to .317. Jamey Carroll also had a nice day at the plate, as he was two for three with a run. James Loney scored two runs.
ON THE MOUND: Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless inning and Matt Guerrier retired the two batters he faced, but a couple of young relievers were brutalized. Scott Elbert gave up three runs, including one on a home run by Nick Hundley. Ramon Troncoso recorded what had to be one of the ugliest saves of the spring, as he gave up a run and had runners at second and third when he recorded the final out.
EXTRA BASES: John Ely learned Saturday that he will not start the season in the majors. Ely was optioned to minor league camp and is expected to start the season with triple-A Albuquerque, but that does not mean he won’t be the Dodgers’ fifth starter if Jon Garland is unavailable April 12. Manager Don Mattingly said he would prefer his fifth starter remain on a starter’s schedule rather than be part of the bullpen for the first week and a half of the season. In other news, infielder Eugenio Velez was reassigned to minor league camp and Ron Mahay was released after being told he would not make the team.
