Corona Centennial is still unstoppable

There are some good football teams in the Inland Division. Vista Murrieta, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Redlands East Valley are still unbeaten at the midway point of the regular season.

The only problem for all the teams is that they’re in the same division as six-time champion Corona Centennial, and there’s just no easy answer for how to deal with the high-scoring Huskies’ offense.

On Friday night, in what was supposed to be a Big VIII League showdown against unbeaten Riverside North, Centennial (4-1) scored touchdowns on its first six possessions en route to a 52-34 blowout.

Romello Goodman rushed for 250 yards in 25 carries and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Hayden Gavett rushed for 117 yards in seven carries and scored three touchdowns while also passing for 174 yards and one touchdown.

“They were awesome; we weren’t,” North Coach Mark Paredes said. “When they ran that first play for a touchdown, our heads were spinning a little bit.”

The first-string Centennial offense scored on eight of its nine possessions before giving way to the reserves late in the third quarter.

The best part of the game for North fans might have been the halftime fireworks show provided for Centennial’s homecoming festivities.

These out-of-control games have become all too familiar for opponents who enter a game against Centennial believing they have a chance at victory only to succumb to an onslaught of big plays and nonstop offensive firepower.

On Centennial’s first play from scrimmage, Goodman ran 65 yards for a touchdown. North (4-1) fumbled on its second play, and Gavett soon ran 15 yards for a touchdown. Before anyone could get comfortable tasting a $5 funnel cake, Centennial was leading, 14-0. It was 28-6 after the first quarter and 45-13 at halftime. Gavett had a 62-yard touchdown run.

“Our goal is to score on every possession,” Gavett said.

The two teams combined for more than 1,000 yards in total offense. North has a left-handed senior quarterback, Justin Gheorghe, who’s having a superb season. He completed 19 of 36 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns. He hasn’t been intercepted all season. North was hurt by an ankle injury suffered in the second quarter by receiver Aaron Peck.

But there seemed to be a helpless feeling among North’s defensive players, because Centennial was able to move the ball whenever it wanted. Handoffs to Goodman up the middle produced big plays.

“We’ve been very happy with his play,” Centennial Coach Matt Logan said of Goodman. “We haven’t been able to uncork him. It’s nice to have him have a big game.”

The offense is back in high gear for Centennial, which is bad news for others in the Inland Division.
