High school football preview: Harbor City Narbonne vs. Carson

The City Section takes center stage Friday night when Division I powers Harbor City Narbonne and Carson meet in a Marine League showdown with playoff implications.

“There’s a lot on the line,” Narbonne Coach Manuel Douglas said.

Besides being a rivalry game, Carson (3-3, 1-0) and Narbonne (4-2, 1-0) are both strong contenders to earn the No. 1 seeding in the Division I playoffs, though Douglas says, “I feel whomever wins or loses, we’ll see each other again.”

Said Carson Coach Elijan Asante: “This is definitely for the No. 1 seed. If you lose this, you won’t get the No. 1 seed.”

There will be no lack of talent on the field at Narbonne.

The Gauchos have versatile quarterback Troy Williams, a junior of whom Asante said, “He’s one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, in my opinion.”

Carson has USC-bound receiver Darreus Rogers. “There’s no doubt he’s their guy,” Douglas said.

Bruce Hicks, who has four interceptions for Narbonne, will get the chance to try to cover Rogers, and that could be the individual matchup of the night.

Carson has won 15 consecutive Marine League games. Each school played a challenging non-league schedule. One common opponent was Long Beach Poly. Carson lost to the Jackrabbits, 38-18. Narbonne lost, 19-16.

The game will be shown on Saturday night at 9 by LA36.

Council meeting

The Southern Section Council meeting is set for Thursday in Long Beach, and that will be the first opportunity for schools to ask questions about a Trinity League proposal to remove all references to “athletically motivated transfers” from the Southern Section and CIF rule books.

Also on the agenda is a proposal to create a double-elimination tournament for the baseball playoffs starting in 2013.

It’s the first council meeting in which the new commissioner, Rob Wigod, will be in charge.

Oaks Christian record

Sophomore quarterback Brandon Dawkins of Westlake Village Oaks Christian set a single-game school passing record last week with 389 yards passing against Simi Valley Royal. The old record was 367 yards held by Jimmy Clausen.
