Friday’s top games

Thousand Oaks (1-0) at Moorpark (1-0), 7 p.m. — The 10-team Marmonte League opens its season with a matchup of teams hoping to crash the championship party usually reserved for St. Bonaventure, Oaks Christian or Westlake. Thousand Oaks and Moorpark were off last week in preparation for a game that could decide a Northern Division playoff berth. Moorpark relies on quarterback Grant Rohach to deliver in key situations. Thousand Oaks lacks a big-name standout, but the Lancers routed Hueneme, 62-0, in their opener, with junior quarterback Clark Abourisk and senior receiver Blake Howell making key contributions. The pick: Moorpark.

Harbor City Narbonne (1-0) vs. Long Beach Poly (2-0) at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m. — This is a game filled with City Section intrigue. Last week, Poly defeated Carson, 38-18. Now Narbonne, Carson’s Marine League rival, gets a shot at the Jackrabbits. Quarterback Troy Williams is a threat with his feet and arm, having run for 87 yards and passed for 256 yards in Narbonne’s 34-32 win over Palos Verdes. Poly is on the verge of a 3-0 start, which would signal a return to elite status. Junior Gerard Wicks has been running the ball well to give Poly more balance on offense. The key is whether the Gauchos’ offensive line can provide enough protection for Williams to be a playmaker. The pick: Poly.

Corona Centennial (0-1) vs. Santa Ana Mater Dei (0-1) at Santa Ana Bowl, 7:30 p.m., FoxSportsWest.com — In its opener, Mater Dei could not handle Carson receiver Darreus Rogers’ athleticism. Now the Monarchs must deal with running back Romello Goodman, who rushed for 198 yards against St. Bonaventure. Mater Dei started 0-2 last season and could face a similar fate if its defense can’t slow the Huskies’ no-huddle, quick-strike attack. The pick: Centennial.
