Camarillo’s Jake Maulhardt sets state record for receptions

Like a basketball player who’s making shot after shot, Camarillo senior wide receiver Jake Maulhardt felt as if he couldn’t be stopped Friday night against Canyon Country Canyon.

When the game was over, the 6-foot-7 Maulhardt had set a state record with 28 receptions for 347 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-28 defeat.

“The quarterback kept giving me the ball,” he said.

According to the Cal-Hi Sports record book, David Sepulveda of Fullerton held the old record of 26 catches in 1988 against Buena Park.

“After the game, my coaches were like, ‘Do you know how many catches you have?’ I was like, 14. They went, ‘We think you broke the state record,’” Maulhardt said.

Fight night in Woodland Hills

School officials will be investigating a brawl that broke out at the conclusion of Woodland Hills El Camino Real’s 36-34 victory over Canoga Park.

Ericson Penate made a 30-yard field goal as time expired. As coaches and players met in the middle of the field to shake hands, fighting erupted. El Camino Real Coach Kevin Williams said one of his players was allegedly struck in the mouth by an adult Canoga Park assistant coach. Canoga Park Coach Ivan Moreno said Saturday his assistants deny the allegation.

“I spoke to all of them, and they were pulling kids off other kids and pushing other kids away,” he said.

Both schools are seeking videos to help determine whether suspensions are warranted.

Overshadowed by the chaos after the game was the dramatic ending. Canoga Park scored the go-ahead two-point conversion with 19 seconds left.

With six seconds left, El Camino Real’s Austin Reeves caught a 34-yard pass to the Canoga Park 43. Then the Hunters were called for pass interference with less than a second remaining, giving Penate a chance to win the game. A 45-yard field-goal attempt was blocked, but the Hunters were assessed a 15-yard penalty for roughing the center.
