UCLA opens wallet for assistant football coaches

While giving UCLA head football coach Jim Mora a hefty raise, UCLA athletic department officials have upped the ante for assistant coaches as well, with a payroll of $2.08 million, a significant bump from $1.645 million last season.

Defensive coordinator Lou Spanos has received a two-year, $1.1-million deal. Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone will receive $350,000 for this season and $375,000 in 2013.

Special teams coach Jeff Ulbrich also received a two-year deal, which will pay him $215,000 in 2012 and $225,000 in 2013.

The contracts for the remainder of the assistant coaches expire in June. All have performance clauses in their contracts.

Funding for the contracts comes from athletic department funds and private donations.

UCLA assistant coach salaries for the 2012 season: Spanos, $550,000; offensive coordinator Mazzone, $350,000; offensive line coach Adrian Klemm, $275,000; defensive back coach Demetrice Martin, $215,000; Ulbrich, $215,000; running back coach Steve Broussard, $175,000; defensive line coach Angus McClure, $165,000; wide receiver coach Eric Yarber, $125,000; and Y-back coach Marques Tuiasosopo, $100,000.
