Brown wins NHRA event at Sonoma

Antron Brown won the top-fuel division Sunday in the NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma, Calif., to move into position to become the first NHRA driver to twice sweep the three-race Western swing.

Brown beat Spencer Massey in the final for his third victory at Sonoma, fourth victory of the season and 35th of his career. Brown finished in 3.814 seconds at 318.02 mph, and Massey trailed in 3.826 at 323.50.

Brown opened the Western swing last week with a victory in the Mile-High NHRA Nationals in Colorado. The NHRA Northwest Nationals are next week in Kent, Wash. He swept the three events in 2009.

Johnny Gray topped the funny car field, Allen Johnson won in pro stock, and Eddie Krawiec in pro stock motorcycle.

Texans’ Johnson suffers injury

Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson says he’ll miss “a week or so” after a minor groin injury in the team’s second morning practice.

Johnson fell awkwardly running a route Sunday morning and had an MRI exam later in the day that showed a “mild strain.”

Johnson sat out nine regular-season games last season because of hamstring injuries and was sidelined from the first organized team activities in the spring after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis sat out most of training camp practice because of tightness in his right hamstring.

Revis called the injury “minor” after he was limited to individual drills Sunday on the first day the Jets practiced in full pads. He says he felt tightness during a rain-soaked practice Saturday, and team trainers opted to be cautious Sunday.

The St. Louis Ramsagreed to terms with defensive end Chris Long on a four-year contract extension through the 2016 season.

Paynter wins the Haskell

Paynter followed his runner-up finish in the Belmont Stakes with a dominating run in the Haskell Invitational, another breakout performance for the colt who languished as Bodemeister’s lesser-known stablemate.

Paynter stormed into the lead entering the far turn and pulled away to win the $1-million Haskell at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., giving trainer Bob Baffert his third straight victory in the race and sixth overall.

Several of the top prospects who have given commitments to Penn State have told the team’s coaches they will stick with the program despite the sanctions handed down by the NCAA last week.

Offensive linemen Brendan Mahon of Randolph, N.J., and Andrew Nelson of Hershey, Pa., Philadelphia wide receiver Will Fuller, defensive end Garrett Sickels of Little Silver, N.J., and two ofBill O’Brien’s most anticipated commitments — tight end Adam Breneman of Camp Hill, Pa., and quarterback Christian Hackenberg of Fork Union, Va. — visited State College on Saturday and met with Penn State coaches.

Iowa sophomore running back De’Andre Johnson was suspended after two run-ins with police in the last week.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Johnson was ticketed for speeding and eluding arrest on Saturday. It says Johnson drove his motorcycle 60 mph in a 25-mph zone and didn’t immediately pull over.
