Of the teams hoping to court Peyton Manning, the Miami Dolphins seem to have many powerful supporters.

Not so fast.

Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin told reporters that he has not yet spoken to Manning -- but added that he intends to soon.

“Obviously, he’s had a phenomenal career up to this point,” Philbin said before a Thursday evening Make-A-Wish Foundation auction at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium. “From all indications, he’s been a great leader in that locker room. He’s had a great career with the Colts. We’ll see how things develop in the next week or so.”

Twelve teams are reportedly in hot pursuit of Manning, including Miami, Arizona, Seattle, Washington, Kansas City, Denver and the New York Jets.

Dolphins receiver Davone Bess added that “it would be an honor to play for, play with” Manning. “Obviously, he’s a great leader. He’s proven. If Peyton’s there, why not go after it? ... We need help at any position we could get.”

Manning is free to sign with any team after the Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that they had released him.

Manning played for the Colts for 14 seasons, winning four MVP awards.
