Eagles sign DeSean Jackson to a five-year deal

The Lions re-signed Calvin Johnson to the biggest deal in NFL history.

The Colts surprised everyone by re-signing Reggie Wayne.

And now the Eagles, too, have buttoned down their star receiver, re-signing DeSean Jackson on Wednesday to a five-year deal reportedly worth $51 million, according to ESPN. Philadelphia had already made him its franchise player.

Jackson, who twice reached the Pro Bowl, spent the better part of the last two seasons sulking about his bargain-basement deal. He held out of training camp last summer in hopes of forcing a contract extension, was deactivated for a game for being late to a team meeting (a rare move by Eagles Coach Andy Reid), and his productivity dipped.

Now, the Eagles are hoping he can put all that behind him, just as he leaves defenders in the dust.

“DeSean is a game-breaker,” Reid said in a statement. “He has the speed and ability to score from anywhere on the field, and he has proven himself to be a big threat for our offense.”
