Hall of Fame receiver Art Monk is the lead plaintiff in a class-action lawsuit filed against the NFL and helmet maker Riddell Inc. over long-term injuries as a result of concussions.

The 82-page lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles last week along with two similar ones, with the three encompassing 193 former players. The suits were filed by the L.A.-based firm Girardi Keese.

According to NFLConcussionLitigation, which first reported the latest litigation, more than 2,000 former players are currently suing the league over concussions.

Among them is former linebacker Gary Plummer, a teammate of Junior Seau’s in San Diego. Plummer believes concussions might have played a role in Seau’s suicide last week, although the family of the Chargers great has not given permission to medical researchers to study his brain.

“I found out through a seminar that I went through with [agent] Leigh Steinberg back in the ‘90s that Grade 1 concussions are being slightly disoriented, seeing stars, or a little bit nauseous,” Plummer said. “I’m waving my hand in the back because they’re telling you you need to sit out a week or two after one of those. I’m like, ‘If you don’t have five of those a game as a middle linebacker, then guess what? You didn’t play.’

“I played 250 games in my career, so according to these guys that’s 1,000 to 1,250 concussions I had in my career. It’s ludicrous. It’s something that happens during the game. There’s got to be some kind of impact on you.”
