Kerry Wood gets standing ovation from Cubs crowd after retiring

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, who said last week that he would retire after his next appearance, did just that over the weekend.

It was an emotional moment at Wrigley Field as Wood entered the game, struck out Dayan Viciedo of the Chicago White Sox, then was removed from the game to a standing ovation. As he walked toward the dugout, his son, Justin, ran out of the dugout to hug him.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Wood told the Associated Press on Saturday. “I’m not going to look back and say, ‘It could have been, what should have been.’ It is what it is. I did it for 14 years and I had a blast doing it.”

When asked to name the favorite moment of his career, Wood didn’t have to search back very far in his memory.

“My favorite memory and probably the best memory in the 14 years was walking off the field and having Justin run out and meet me … You can’t beat that … I knew maybe he might be in the dugout but I did not expect him to run out and hug me and he didn’t want to let go. You can’t put anything above that.”
