Cal FC stuns the Timbers in overtime in U.S. Open Cup

Arthur Aghasya’s goal five minutes into overtime lifted Cal FC to a stunning 1-0 upset of the Portland Timbers on Wednesday in a third-round match of soccer’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in Portland, Ore.

Aghasyan, who played for a time last season with Real Salt Lake, charged Portland goalkeeper Troy Perkins in the 95th minute and rifled the ball into the goal as Perkins slid on the turf

Cal FC, an upstart Ventura County team coached by former U.S. national team standout Erc Wynalda, is one of just two amateur teams left in the Cup, the oldest soccer tournament in the U.S. Major League Soccer teams didn’t fare nearly as well with eight of them falling -- including Portland on Wednesday and the defending league champion Galaxy the night before.

Chivas USA was one of eight MLS teams to win in the third round, advancing Tuesday with a victory over the Ventura County Fusion.

Cal FC will meet another MLS team -- the Seattle Sounders -- in the fourth round on June 5 in Washington. The Sounders are the three-time defending U.S. Open Cup champions. Chivas will travel to Cary, N.C., to meet the Carolina RailHawks on Tuesday. Carolina beat the Galaxy in its third-round match.

The Timbers’ Kris Boyd missed on a penalty kick in 80th minute that could have given Portland the win.

With Derby Carillo’s shutout in goal, the second in two games, Cal FC has gone 228 minutes without allowing a goal, outscoring opponents 6-0 over that span.
