Sixers center Andrew Bynum out indefinitely

Andrew Bynum is known more for bowling than basketball in Philadelphia, and it’s going to stay that way awhile longer.

Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Tony DiLeo said Saturday that Bynum is out indefinitely with bilateral bone bruises and weakened cartilage in his knees.

“We don’t know when he’ll be back,” DiLeo said. “Only Andrew’s body can answer that question. When he feels better, we can step up the rehab program. We just have to wait to see how he reacts to the rehab.”

The 25-year-old big man was recovering from a bone bruise on his right knee when he injured his left knee while bowling this month. Despite the delay, the team is hopeful Bynum will play this season.

DiLeo said the team is “consulting with the best experts in the world” and “doing everything possible to get him back on the court.”

Philadelphia acquired Bynum and guard Jason Richardson in a four-team deal by trading Andre Iguodala, Moe Harkless, Nikola Vucevic and a future first-round pick. The Sixers have started 7-5 without Bynum this season.

Bynum is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
