Former Lane Kiffin recruit Bryce Brown makes Eagles history

Bryce Brown really hadn’t been heard from since a stellar high school career that ended in 2008.

Until Monday night, when he filled in for injured Philadelphia running back LeSean McCoy.

Making his first start at any level since his senior season at Wichita East (Kansas) High, Brown set an Eagles rookie record with 178 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 65 and five yards, in the team’s 30-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

But after the game, Brown was more focused on his role in the Eagles’ seventh straight loss than anything else.

“My performance doesn’t mean anything to me at all,” said Brown, who lost two fumbles, including one in Carolina territory. “The important thing to me was for us to get a win and that didn’t happen tonight. I feel like a lot of that has to do with my two turnovers that happened to really cost us.”

A top recruit out of high school, Brown decided to attend college at Tennessee, where Lane Kiffin was then the coach. After rushing for 460 yards and three touchdowns on 101 carries as a freshman backup to Montario Hardesty, Brown transferred to Kansas State after Kiffin left the Volunteers for USC.

He had to sit out the 2010 season under NCAA rules, then was set back by an ankle injury and wound up carrying the ball just three times for the Wildcats before leaving the program.

Still, the Eagles took a shot on Brown in the seventh round of the draft, and now it looks like he could have a bright future in the NFL.

“I thought Bryce did some good things,” Eagles Coach Andy Reid said. “He’s a young guy and he’ll learn from this. He’s a smart kid.”
