Shocker of the day (so far): Texas Tech leads West Virginia, 35-7

The halftime score of 35-7 between No. 4 West Virginia and unranked Texas Tech in Lubbock is just what we expected.

We did not expect Texas Tech, however, to have the 35.

In what’s shaping up as the biggest upset Saturday, Texas Tech is crushing West Virginia as it possibly puts a dent in Geno Smith‘s Heisman Trophy hopes.

Texas Tech has the nation’s No. 2 defense, but looked vulnerable in last week’s 41-20 loss against Oklahoma.

Texas Tech quarterback Seth Doege is outplaying Smith so far, having thrown for 336 yards and four touchdowns in the first half.

Smith, the runaway leader in this year’s Heisman race, has 175 first-half yards and a touchdown pass. He now has 25 for the season with no interceptions.

Texas Tech, however, has held Smith to only 5.1 yards per completion.

West Virginia might have been caught sleeping between last week’s big win at Texas and next week’s home game against No. 6 Kansas State.

Unless the Mountaineers wake up fast, their national title dreams could soon be over.
