No name change for Big East despite westward expansion

The Big East has announced it will uphold the curious college tradition of not changing its name no matter how numerically or geographically challenged it may become

Next season, the Big East will add members from four time zones, including San Diego State and Boise State.

“There’s tremendous brand equity built up in the Big East name,” Commissioner Mike Aresco told the Associated Press.

The Big East (North-South-West) made the announcement as it prepares to start negotiations on a new television deal.

The Big East didn’t start this idea of confusing and confounding fans. The Big Ten started it in the 1990s when it added 11th member Penn State. The Big Ten moved to 12 teams last year when it added Nebraska.

The Big 12 continues as the Big 12 even though it has only 10 members.

The Pac-10, maybe the smartest major conference with Stanford and Cal as academic flagships, changed its name to Pac-12 after adding Colorado and Utah.

“We will be mathematically correct going forward,” Scott said in 2010.

Scott, it should be noted, is a Harvard graduate.
