New world No. 1 Stacy Lewis struggling at Kraft Nabisco
RANCHO MIRAGE -- Stacy Lewis, who recently took over No. 1 in the women’s world golf rankings, has struggled through three rounds of the season’s first major for LPGA players, the Kraft Nabisco Champonship at Mission Hills Country Club.
Lewis, a 28-year-old who won here two years ago, shot a second consectuve 71 on a day when scoring seems to be low and is one under par for the tournament. That leaves her tied for 25th at the moment.
“It wasn’t a very good day,” Lewis said. “I didn’t hit it very close and didn’t give myself many birdie opportunities. I just kind of struggled all day.”
Lewis had three birdies and two bogeys but she said carrying the No. 1 ranking isn’t the problem.
“Coming into the week,” she said, “my swing didn’t feel great. I was kind of hopig I would figure things out by now, but I just haven’t. I think the weather is pretty perfect today so I’m probably going to stay pretty far back.”
