“Thank you, Reggie.”

That became the chant of fans from Redondo High late in the boys’ basketball season as the team was winning 21 consecutive games and a CIF state Division II championship.

Reggie Morris Jr., the Sea Hawks’ first-year coach, turned around a program that was 10-17 last season. At one point this season, Redondo was 7-8. The Sea Hawks finished at 28-8, including their state championship in Sacramento.

Morris, 34, has been selected the boys’ basketball coach of the year in Southern California by The Times.

The Sea Hawks won the Southern Section 2A championship, making Morris one of the few coaches to have coached three teams to section titles.

“The will of the young men was tremendously strong,” Morris said. “They wanted to be remembered for winning and for doing the right things.”

His father, Reggie Sr., was the coach at Los Angeles Manual Arts during the 1980s when the Toilers were a City Section power.
