Galaxy’s Omar Gonzalez to start for U.S. in World Cup qualifier

Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez is in Juergen Klinsmann’s starting lineup for Wednesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The start will be just the fourth with the U.S. national team and the first in World Cup qualifying for Gonzalez, who is starting in favor of former captain Carlos Bocanegra.

Starting alongside Gonzalez on the backline is Timmy Chandler, Geoff Cameron and Fabian Johnson.

In the midfield the U.S. will go with Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones and Danny Williams with Klinsmann starting three forwards in Clint Dempsey, Eddie Johnson and Jozy Altidore.

Veteran Tim Howard is in goal.

The U.S. must finish in the top three in its six-team pool, which also includes Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica and Jamaica. The final 10-match round of regional qualifying for Brazil 2014 runs through October.
