Texas hands Tigers’ Max Scherzer his first loss

Max Scherzer’s unbeaten run ended Saturday night when the Texas Rangers tagged the Detroit All-Star with his first loss of the season, Tigers 7-1. Scherzer (13-1), trying to become the first pitcher in the majors to start 14-0 since Roger Clemens in 1986, allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings. It was first regular-season loss since Sept. 23, a span of 21 starts.

A-Rod, MLB meet

One day after meeting with Major League Baseball officials probing the distribution of banned performance-enhancing drugs, the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez went 0 for 3 for Class-A Tampa, and is two for 18 with five strikeouts in his injury rehabilitation assignment. Rodriguez, coming back from January hip surgery, has been linked to Biogenesis, the closed Florida anti-aging clinic being investigated by MLB.

Pittsburgh left-hander Jeff Locke will miss his start Sunday against the Mets and will sit out the All-Star game because of back tightness. . . . Philadelphia center fielder Ben Revere suffered a broken foot against the White Sox. . . . Toronto activated third baseman Brett Lawrie, who missed almost two months with a left ankle sprain. . . . Houston second baseman Jose Altuve signed a four-year contract.
