Watch Justin Gatlin beat Usain Bolt in Rome
Justin Gatlin beat six-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt in a 100-meter race on Thursday at the Rome Golden Gala Diamond League meet.
Gatlin finished in 9.94 seconds, 0.01 second ahead of Bolt.
Bolt, a Jamaican, suffered a minor hamstring injury earlier in the season but was the fastest runner out of the blocks on Thursday.
”I think [that] threw me off a little bit,” Bolt joked to the BBC.
Gatlin, an American, won an Olympic medal in 2004 but served a four-year suspension and had a world record stripped after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs in 2006.
This was the first time that Gatlin and Bolt raced since last year’s London Olympics final, which Bolt won in 9.63. Gatlin was third.
