Dodgers get first walk-off win of season, 2-1

This Yasiel Puig craziness is getting so out of hand, Friday night the Dodgers managed their first walk-off victory of the season.

Without a hit.

While Puig the Amazing was busy working on his legend with his fourth home run in five games, the Dodgers edged the Braves, 2-1, in 10 innings when pinch-runner Skip Schumaker scored from third on a wild pitch.

All routine and everything.

Ramon Hernandez led off the bottom of the 10th with a base hit and took second on reliever Anthony Varvaro’s first wild pitch. Luis Cruz followed with a single, Hernandez stopping at third.

Schumaker ran for Hernandez, and Varvaro’s second pitch to Juan Uribe was a curve that bounced in the dirt, got past catcher Evan Gattis and rolled to the backstop.

Schumaker scored without a play. All that was left was for the Dodgers to rip off his jersey, a little celebration they started last year in walk-off situations. And remembered and everything.

“It is shocking to me,” Schumaker said. “I feel someone is going to walk-off for us every time we’re up.”

Friday was the first start for Hyun-Jin Ryu — yesterday’s Dodgers foreign rookie sensation — since he threw a two-hit shutout against the Angels on May 28 in Anaheim. In that one he took a comebacker off the top of his left foot and was skipped a turn.

But he looked no less effective against the Braves, holding them to one run in his 72/3 innings. The left-hander gave up six hits and a walk, with six strikeouts.

The game was scoreless when Atlanta pushed a run across in the fourth.

First baseman Freddie Freeman, the one Brave to consistently hit Ryu hard, opened the inning with a double off the left-field wall and scored on a Dan Uggla single.

With left-hander Paul Maholm almost exclusively inducing grounders from the Dodgers, it remained a 1-0 Atlanta lead when Wonder Boy came to bat in the bottom of the sixth.

Maybe just for fun, Puig showed bunt on Maholm’s first pitch. The corner infielders did not sneak in on the next one. Which was promptly delivered into the left-field pavilion.

Puig’s home runs get out of the ballpark as if they’re trying to break the sound barrier. They rocket out, almost explode off his bat. And this one went out on a line, to tie the game at 1-1.

It was his fourth home run in five games, adding one of each to his collection — a solo shot, a two-run homer, a three-run blast and that little grand slam from Thursday.

“That’s how I prepare myself with the coaches, and it’s just happening,” Puig said.

According to Elias, Puig became only the second player since 1900 to hit four home runs in his first five games (Mike Jacobs 2005). He also tied the record for most RBIs (10) in his first five games with two others (Danny Espinosa 2010, Jack Merson 1951).

Otherwise, Puig’s had a slow start.

Apparently the Braves already have seen enough of this Yasiel Puig Show. When he next came to bat in the eighth with two outs, the game still tied at 1-1 and a runner on third, they walked him intentionally. He of the career 19 at-bats. Add one more first to his budding resume.

The move paid off when Mark Ellis flied out to right to end the inning, but five games into this career, Puig had already earned amazing respect.

Brandon League, who got the benefit of questionable call in the 10th, earned the victory to even his record at 2-2.
