Angels’ Mike Trout is one of three finalists for American League MVP

Angels outfielder Mike Trout was announced Tuesday as one of three finalists for the American League most valuable player award.

Trout joins Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis as finalists. Cabrera won the award last year and is favored to repeat.

The winner will be announced Nov. 14. Cabrera would be the first AL player to win in consecutive years since Frank Thomas of the Chicago White Sox did so in 1993-94.

“I think it’s going to be another thing like last year,” Trout said on the final day of the Angels’ season. “I can’t take it away from Cabrera. He won the division and is going to the playoffs, and we’re heading home after the game. That’s a big contribution, being on a winning team.”

The Tigers advanced to the AL Championship Series. Neither the Angels nor the Orioles qualified for the playoffs. Voting concluded before the playoffs started.

Cabrera, 30, won the triple crown last year but put up better statistics this year. He hit the same number of home runs (44), but his batting average rose from .330 to .348, his on-base percentage from .393 to .442, his slugging percentage from .606 to .636 and his OPS from .999 to 1.078.

Trout, 22, batted .323 with 27 home runs, 33 stolen bases, and a .988 OPS. He led the league in runs and walks.

Davis, 27, batted .286 and led the league with 53 home runs and 138 runs batted in. He had a 1.004 OPS.
