Simone Biles, Kyla Ross are best in gymnastics all-around

Simone Biles edged teammate Kyla Ross to give the U.S. women’s gymnastics team a sweep of the first two places in the all-around competition Friday in the world championships at Antwerp, Belgium.

Biles, 16, also qualified for all four apparatus finals this weekend, the first female U.S. gymnast to do so since Shannon Miller in 1991.

Ross, a 16-year-old from Aliso Viejo, led by 0.016 points going into the floor routine, but Biles finished impressively for an overall score of 60.216 points to Ross’ 59.332. Aliya Mustafina of Russia took the bronze with 58.856.

Jason Kidd suspended two games

Brooklyn Nets Coach Jason Kidd was suspended for the first two games of the season after pleading guilty in a drunk-driving case. The Nets open at Cleveland on Oct. 30 and host the defending champion Miami Heat on Nov. 1. The suspension stemmed from a July 15, 2012, incident in which Kidd crashed into a utility pole on eastern Long Island.

Kevin Harvick won his first Sprint Cup pole since September 2006 when he turned a lap of 187.526 mph, the fastest in qualifying at Kansas Speedway. Ricky Stenhouse was next at 187.480, and Jimmie Johnson was third at 187.162. It ended Harvick’s drought of 254 races without a pole.

Chip Ganassi Racing added reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan to its team and dropped Honda for Chevrolet.

John Force drove his Ford Mustang to a run of 3.987 seconds at 323.50 mph to lead the funny-car qualifying in the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Mohnton, Pa. It earned him six bonus points to move into a tie for the series lead with Matt Hagan. Other qualifying leaders were Morgan Lucas (top fuel), Allen Johnson (pro stock) and Michael Ray (pro stock motorcycle).

Major League Soccer suspended Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena one game for leaving his technical area and entering the field of play during second-half stoppage time of the Sept. 29 game against Portland.

The Angels claimed right-handed reliever Josh Wall from the Miami Marlins and added him to their 40-man roster. Wall, 26, was part of the deal that brought starter Ricky Nolasco to the Dodgers in July.

Top seedings in the 2014 World Cup groups will be host Brazil and the seven highest teams in the October rankings. The system decided by FIFA’s executive committee means Belgium and Colombia are almost assured of being seeded in the Dec. 6 draw if they advance as expected this month. The current top seven teams are Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Colombia, Belgium and Uruguay.

Rafael Nadal kept alive his hopes of wresting the top ranking from Novak Djokovic by rallying for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Fabio Fognini of Italy in the quarterfinals of the China Open at Beijing. Djokovic swept Sam Querrey, 6-1, 6-2. Nadal needs to reach the final to have a chance of displacing Djokovic. Jessica Korda shot a five-under-par 68 to take a two-stroke lead after the second round of the Reignwood Classic at Beijing. Korda had a 14-under 132 total.

Britain and Ireland trimmed Continental Europe’s lead to one point in the Seve Trophy after the second day of fourballs at Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, France. Nicolas Colsaerts and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano equaled the biggest winning margin in the tournament’s history with a 6-and-5 win over Paul Lawrie and Stephen Gallacher to help Europe lead, 5 1/2 to 4 1/2.
