Missy Franklin, Candace Parker named sportswomen of the year

Missy Franklin is going to need a larger trophy case.

The 18-year-old swimmer who took the 2012 London Olympics by storm and won a record six gold medals at the recent world championships has been named sportswoman of the year by the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Franklin beat out tennis star Serena Williams and two women expected to compete at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, figure skater Mao Asada and wheelchair athlete Tatyana McFadden.

“I don’t even know what to say,” the always ebullient Franklin told ESPN. “This is one of the most incredible honors I have ever received.”

Candace Parker of the Sparks was named the top woman in team sports after winning the WNBA’s 2013 MVP award with a scoring average of 17.9.

The WNBA won the Billie Jean King Contribution Award. Swimmer Melissa Stockwell won the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award and tennis player Vivian Hao won the Annika Inspiration Award.
