Kings go in for the penalty kill to take down the Stars

The Kings want this stretch of being home for eight of their next nine games to set them up for the long, cold winter.

Thanks to more impressive work in killing five penalties and three third-period goals, their mission started successfully Saturday night at Staples Center with a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.

Kings defenseman Drew Doughty slid a tiebreaking shot past Dallas goalie Dan Ellis less than five minutes into the third, and Kyle Clifford drove from the Kings’ blue line before launching a long-distance shot that beat Ellis high on his right side with 6 minutes 58 seconds remaining.

Justin Williams assisted Doughty’s goal and scored twice earlier while Anze Kopitar had three assists.

Defenseman Matt Greene added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left.

The home stretch, which continues through Nov. 9, includes seven games against Western Conference competition, with five of those opponents in the Pacific Division with the Kings (6-3).

“It’s important to create an identity at home,” Williams said. “We did that last year. We’re off to a good start.”

Dallas (3-4), which started the night ranked 13th in the Western Conference with just 15 goals through six games, took a 1-0 lead 8:49 into the game when 21-year-old forward Tyler Seguin redirected a shot by Stars captain Jamie Benn past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

Quick responded in the period by keeping Dallas scoreless during two power plays.

Right wing Williams then positioned himself in front of Ellis and knocked in a goal on a pass centered to the crease by defenseman Jake Muzzin with 3:29 left in the first.

A missed power play earlier in the first made the Kings five for 30 with a man advantage this season — leaving them ranked 20th in the NHL in that category.

But after Dallas’ Stephane Robidas was whistled for interference with one minute left in the first, Williams struck again, scoring with 28 seconds remaining in the first on a backhanded flip.

Williams’ shot deflected off Ellis’ left glove as he reached for it, belly down, facing the net.

The Kings then affirmed their penalty-killing strength by forcing a third Dallas power play to expire less than six minutes into the second period.

Back at even strength, however, the Kings let Dallas tie it, 2-2, when Dallas center Rich Peverley scored to cap a faceoff the Stars won on the Kings’ end.

Benn collected a pass and scooted an up-close shot that skidded off one of Quick’s skates to Peverley, who pounded the puck into the net with 11:47 left in the second.

High-sticking and interference penalties on Kings captain Dustin Brown were killed off later in the second.

That meant the Kings had given up just four goals in 37 penalty-kill situations and had scored just six goals in the last three games before Saturday’s five-goal performance. The Kings have killed 14 consecutive penalties.

Before the game, Kings Coach Darryl Sutter made right wing Matt Frattin a healthy scratch.
