Angels ace Jered Weaver is scratched from Friday night start

Angels ace Jered Weaver, who experienced some forearm tightness last week, was scratched from Friday night’s scheduled start against the Seattle Mariners. The team did not issue a reason for the move.

Right-hander Matt Shoemaker, called up from triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, will start Friday night, and Jerome Williams and C.J. Wilson will remain on schedule and pitch Saturday night and Sunday, respectively.

Weaver, who missed seven weeks in April and May because of a broken left elbow, is 10-8 with a 3.36 earned run average in 23 games, including Saturday’s six-inning, two-run, six-hit win in Houston, his fifth straight quality start.

It’s possible the Angels may push Weaver back so he can pitch against the American League West-leading Oakland Athletics and wild card-contending Texas Rangers next week.

But it’s more likely that the team does not want to risk further injury to the right-hander, who is completing the second year of a five-year, $85-million deal.

Shoemaker went 11-13 with a 4.64 ERA in 29 starts for Salt Lake, with 160 strikeouts, 29 walks and 27 home runs allowed in 184 1/3 innings.

That the Angels chose Shoemaker to start Friday over Tommy Hanson, who was recalled on Monday after a one-month demotion to triple-A, probably doesn’t bode well for Hanson’s future in Anaheim.

Hanson, who is 4-3 with a 5.59 ERA in 13 starts, made $3.725 million this season and is eligible for arbitration this winter, but the Angels are not expected to tender him a contract.
