Zach Johnson wins in Tournament of Champions

Zach Johnson started the new year the way he ended the last one.

Johnson pulled away with three consecutive birdies on the back nine at Kapalua, Hawaii, and closed with a seven-under-par 66 for a one-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in the Tournament of Champions on Monday.

Spieth, who had a one-shot lead going to the back nine, birdied his last two holes for a 69.

“I just picked it apart,” said Johnson, who finished at 19-under 273. “I didn’t deviate from anything I typically do on a golf course.”

Webb Simpson, tied with Spieth and defending champion Dustin Johnson to start the final round, never caught up and closed with a 70. He tied for third with Kevin Streelman, who had a 67.

Su’a-Filo headed to NFL

UCLA offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo will forgo his senior season and make himself available for the NFL draft.

Su’a-Filo, the Bruins’ top offensive lineman, was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection and was chosen second-team All-American by the Associated Press and was the winner of the Pac-12’s Morris Trophy, given to the top offensive and defensive lineman each season.

UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, guard Alex Redmond and defensive end Eddie Vanderdoes were named to the Freshman All-American team by the Football Writers’ Assn. of America. UCLA was the only school with three players.

Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is returning for his senior season.

Mannion, who has already graduated, announced his decision in a statement released by the Beavers.

Mannion set a Pac-12 Conference season record for passing yards with 4,662 and threw an Oregon State-record 37 touchdown passes, third-most for a season in conference history.

Cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu said he will stay at Oregon for his senior season.

Ekpre-Olomu was the Ducks’ second-leading tackler with 84 stops this season. He also had three interceptions.

Big 12 Conference rushing champion Lache Seastrunk is bypassing his senior season at Baylor to make himself available for the NFL draft.

The Oregon transfer played two seasons at Baylor, and was the first player in school history with two 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He ran for 1,177 yards and 11 touchdowns in 11 games this season, missing nearly three full games because of a groin injury.

Germany’s Felix Neureuther used a blistering second run to edge first-leg leader Marcel Hirscher and win a World Cup night slalom at Bormio, Italy.

Trailing by just 0.01 after the opening run, Neureuther attacked from start to finish in his second trip down the Stelvio course for a two-leg combined time of 1 minute 59.75 seconds.

Hirscher, the two-time defending overall World Cup winner from Austria, finished second, 0.36 of a second behind, and Manfred Moelgg of Italy placed third.
