Clippers Coach Doc Rivers hints team could sign Hedo Turkoglu

Coach Doc Rivers gave a strong indication Tuesday that the Clippers soon could be signing free-agent forward Hedo Turkoglu.

Asked before practice if he could see the Clippers signing Turkoglu to a contract, Rivers said, “We could, yeah. We’re looking at him strong. I can say that much.”

The Clippers have a full 15-man roster and would have to waive a player before they could sign Turkoglu.

But a Turkoglu deal could be done as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, the day the Clippers leave for a seven-game, 12-day trip.

The most likely candidates to be let go would be point guards Maalik Wayns and Darius Morris, both of whom are playing on 10-day contracts that expire this week.

Turkoglu, 34, worked out for Rivers and the Clippers Thursday at the team’s practice facility in Playa Vista.

“He made shots from everywhere,” Rivers said Friday. “He looked good. It was a good workout.”

The 6-foot-10 Turkoglu has averaged 11.9 points and 3.1 assists over 12-plus NBA seasons.

The Orlando Magic had told Turkoglu to stay away from the team this season, and finally waived him Jan. 3.

Turkoglu played in only 11 games last season with Orlando because of injuries and a 20-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug use.

“I just like him as a player,” Rivers said Friday. “I think he’s out there and we should look at him. I’ve always liked him. He can play the three [small forward] and four [power forward]. It’s a position that we can use in some ways. So we’re looking.”

Vujacic in mix

The Clippers also still are considering signing former Lakers shooting guard Sasha Vujacic, according to NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly about the situation.

Vujacic, who executives said has worked out for the Clippers in the past, has been working out in Los Angeles. The Clippers have been monitoring his progress.

Meanwhile, Rivers said rookie forward Reggie Bullock, out since injuring his left ankle Dec. 7 at Cleveland, would suit up for Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center.
