Mets acquire first baseman James Loney

The New York Mets acquired first baseman James Loney from the San Diego Padres on Saturday for cash.

Loney, 32, has spent this season in the minors, hitting .342 with two home runs and 28 runs batted in for triple-A El Paso.

The Mets lost first baseman Lucas Duda for at least four weeks because of a stress fracture in his lower back.

Loney hit .280 with four home runs, 16 doubles and 32 RBIs in 104 games with Tampa Bay last year. The Rays released him April 3 and he signed with the Padres.

General Manager Sandy Alderson says Loney might not be added to the active major league roster until Tuesday, the next time the Mets are scheduled to face a right-handed starter.

Cain is put on DL by Giants

The San Francisco Giants put right-hander Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring.

Cain, 31, felt tightness in the second inning against the Colorado Rockies on Friday and exited the game soon after. He is 1-5 with a 5.20 earned-run average.

Blue Jays’ Tulowitzki is put on DL

The Toronto Blue Jays put shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list because of a low-grade strain in his right quadriceps.

Tulowitzki was injured stealing second base in New York against the Yankees on Tuesday.

Tulowitzki is batting .204 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs.

Braves put Aybar on DL

The Atlanta Braves have put shortstop Erick Aybar on the 15-day disabled list becasue of a bruised right foot.

Aybar left Friday night’s game in the fifth, one inning after he was hit by a pitch from Miami’s Adam Conley.

Aybar, acquired as part of an off-season deal that sent shortstop Andrelton Simmons to the Angels, is hitting .182.
