NBA roundup: Nets center Lopez expands his game

Brooklyn’s Brook Lopez, who had made four of 38 three-point tries in his career before Wednesday, made four of five in the first half against Detroit and the Nets defeated the Pistons, 109-101.

Lopez didn’t make another three-pointer, but he finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds, and Sean Kilpatrick added 24 points for the Nets.

Brooklyn made 16 of its 20 shots in the first quarter to take a 38-30 advantage. The Nets had more turnovers (five) than misses. Lopez had 14 points in the first quarter and 24 by the end of the half as Brooklyn took a 71-55 lead to the locker room.

Toronto 113, at Washington 103: DeMar DeRozan continued his hot start by scoring 40 points and outdueling John Wall in a showcase of All-Star guards. DeRozan was 14 of 23 from the floor despite leaving the game briefly to get his ankles taped. Wall scored 33 points on 13-of-19 shooting and 11 assists. Toronto turned 21 Washington turnovers into 30 points.

Houston 118, at New York 99: James Harden had 30 points and 15 assists, and the Rockets won their seventh in a row at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks haven’t defeated the Rockets at home since Jan. 26, 2009, so long ago that their coach was current Houston Coach Mike D’Antoni.

at Charlotte 109, Philadelphia 93: Kemba Walker had 22 points, Nicolas Batum scored 17 of his 20 points in the third quarter and the Hornets handed the 76ers their fourth straight loss to open the season.

at Memphis 89, New Orleans 83 (OT): JaMychal Green scored 21 points, Mike Conley added 20 and the Grizzlies beat the winless Pelicans, holding Anthony Davis to 10 points on three-of-13 shooting.

at Boston 107, Chicago 100: Isaiah Thomas had 23 points and 10 assists, and the Celtics handed the Bulls their first loss of the season. Boston played without center Al Horford, who was placed in concussion protocol Tuesday after exhibiting concussive symptoms during practice.

at Utah 97, Dallas 81: George Hill, who came to the Jazz in a three-team trade in the off-season, continued his strong play with 25 points.

at Phoenix 118, Portland 115 (OT): Eric Bledsoe dropped in a rainbow three-pointer at the overtime buzzer to give the Suns the win.
