Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he hasn’t ruled out having shortstop Jose Iglesias (finger) back in the lineup before the end of the season. Iglesias sounded less optimistic that he’ll play again, though.

Iglesias said he went to see a doctor Friday but had not heard what the results of tests were yet.

“It’s better,” Iglesias said. “Range of motion is better. It’s healing, not as fast as I would love to, but it’s getting better. I will be fine.”

Iglesias said he’s not ready yet for baseball activities.

“We don’t have that much time left,” Iglesias said. “And it is better, but I’m not in a hurry. I just want to be healthy.”

Asked if there was still a possibility he’d need surgery on the fractured middle finger, he said: “I hope not. I hope not.

“My main goal is get healthy and be ready for next year.”

Iglesias is batting .300 with 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 44 runs scored in 120 games this season.

“Every time I’m sitting on the bench and not helping the team and not playing, it’s tough. But it is what it is. All I can do right now is put myself in a better position and try to feel better.

“Of course you want to finish on the field. But can’t do anything about it. It was a hit by pitch. I can’t control that. We’ll see. I feel better. That’s a good thing. I feel better today. And we’ll see how I continue.”
