Galaxy’s Landon Donovan, Robbie Keane make MLS First XI

Galaxy forward Robbie Keane and team captain Landon Donovan were named Monday to Major League Soccer’s First XI, the league’s postseason all-star team.

Keane, playing his first full season in MLS, finished fourth in the league in scoring with 16 goals before making five more in the playoffs. Keane also fueled the Galaxy’s second-half run to a postseason berth by recording a goal or an assist in 15 of the team’s final 19 games.

Donovan, who made the team as a midfielder, was second in the league with 14 assists in just 26 games. That’s the second-highest single-season total in his stellar MLS career.

Joining Keane at forward is San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski, who tied the MLS single-season scoring record with 27 goals, and Thierry Henry of the New York Red Bulls. The other midfielders named to the team were Graham Zusi of Sporting Kansas City, the league’s assist leader with 15; Osvaldo Alonso of the Seattle Sounders; and D.C. United’s Chris Pontius.

The MLS’ best defenders are Matt Besler of Sporting Kansas City, Aurelien Collin of Sporting Kansas City and Victor Bernardez of the San Jose Earthquakes.

Kansas City’s Jimmy Nielsen was named the league’s top keeper after a season in which he posted 15 shutouts and a 0.79 goals-against average in 34 games. He was the only keeper to play in every one of his team’s games.
