Boise State’s Chris Petersen to become Washington football coach
Chris Petersen, who built Boise State into a national power in college football, is reportedly set to take over as coach at Washington.
Petersen and the Broncos burst onto the national scene with a pair of victories in the Fiesta Bowl and rose to prominence by accumulating a record of 92-12 in eight seasons that included a pair of victories over Oregon.
[UPDATE, 9 a.m.: The news that Petersen will replace Steve Sarkisian, who took the USC football head coaching job earlier this week, was first reported by ESPN and confirmed by the Associated Press. Washington has confirmed the hiring of Petersen.]
Petersen, who had been targeted by UCLA and USC as well as other Pac-12 schools in the past, guided Boise State to five Mountain West Conference championships during which time the Broncos posted four consecutive 12-win seasons.
The Huskies went 8-4 this season, including a season-opening, 38-6 victory over Boise State and a 27-7 victory last week over Washington State in the Apple Cup. They finished in the middle of the Pac-12 Conference with a 5-4 record, which included consecutive losses to Stanford, Oregon and Arizona State as well as another to UCLA.
Boise State finished the regular season at 8-4, losing three Mountain West road games, one by a point to Fresno State and another in overtime to San Diego State.
