Ed Reed to be released by Houston Texans, reports say

Ed Reed has been a huge disappointment in Houston nine games into the three-year, $15-million deal he signed with the Texans during the off-season.

And now it looks as if he won’t even have the rest of the season, let alone the remainder of his contract, to redeem himself.

The nine-time Pro Bowl safety will be released by the Texans on Tuesday, two days after saying the team was “outplayed and outcoached” in a loss to the Arizona Cardinals, according to multiple media sources. The Houston Chronicle first reported the move.

Reed missed the preseason and first two games of the regular season following arthroscopic surgery on his hip. In the seven games since then he contributed just 14 tackles and six assists.

For that, Reed earned somewhere from $6 million to $7 million from the Texans in guaranteed salary, base salary and a signing bonus.

Reed was seen as a top free agency prize during the winter, coming off his seventh-straight Pro Bowl season with the Baltimore Ravens and a Super Bowl title. But he ended up losing his starting job to Shiloh Keo in the last two games and played just 12 snaps against the Cardinals.

While there has been no official announcement on Reed’s release, the 12-year veteran seemed to acknowledge the end to his short Texans tenure Tuesday on Twitter:
