Team USA loses to Russia at world junior hockey tournament
Team USA goaltender John Gibson, who was chosen by the Ducks in the second round of the 2011 entry draft, stopped 28 shots but he and his teammates lost to Russia, 2-1, on Friday in a preliminary-round game at the World Junior Championships.
Winnipeg Jets prospect Jacob Trouba scored the only goal for the U.S., which had routed Germany, 8-0, in its tournament opener.
The U.S. stands third in its group. The tournament is being played in Ufa, Russia.
“Both teams played extremely well,” Team USA Coach Phil Housley said on the usahockey.com website. “Both teams were a bounce away from a win and unfortunately for us Russia got the bounce it needed. We’ll take a lot from this game tonight. Our game was where it should be and I’m very proud of the way our guys played.”
Team USA’s next game is against Canada, which rallied to defeat Slovakia, 6-3, on Friday. The U.S.-Canada game will be aired at 1:30 a.m. Pacific time Sunday on the NHL Network and will be streamed live at nhl.com
Canada is 2-0 but might lose a player or two because of infractions that led to disciplinary review by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
