Kevin Ward Jr. died of massive blunt trauma to the head after he was hit by NASCAR star Tony Stewart’s car during a race Saturday night in New York, according to authorities.

During a news conference Monday, Ontario County Sheriff Phillip Povero said the investigation into the fatal crash remains open. No criminal charges have been filed.

“No facts exist that support criminal behavior or conduct,” Povero said. However, investigators continue to request that any amateur video taken during the race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park be submitted to them.

Video already obtained will be reviewed by experts in the motorsports world, Povero said.

There is no timeline for the conclusion of the inquiry, and investigators are being extremely thorough, Povero said.

Ward, 20, was struck and killed by Stewart’s car when it appeared he tried to confront Stewart while on foot during a caution in the dirt-track race. Although he was wearing a helmet, Ward died of massive blunt trauma to the head, Povero said.
