Former USC golfer Lizette Salas in third at U.S. Women’s Open

Former USC star Lizette Salas, in her second full year on the LPGA Tour, is in third place, three shots behind Korea’s I.K. Kim, after shooting a second-round 72 on Friday in the 68th U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Salas, who contended for the lead for three days at the Kraft Nabisco Championship last spring before fading to 25th, has a tie for 15th as her best U.S. Open finish in 2011.

She shot a first-round 68 on Thursday.

There are 10 USC golfers who made the field this year, including Salas, Annie Park, Doris Chen and Kyung Kim, who were all on USC’s 2013 NCAA title team.

Another Korean, Inbee Park, ranked No. 1 in the world, is trying to become the first player in LPGA history to win the first three majors of the season. Park won the Kraft Nabisco and LPGA Championship already this season.

Park shot a stellar five-under-par 67 to trail pace-setter Ha-Neul Kim by one shot after the first round. Park just started her second round and birdied her first hole to pull within one shot of I.K. Kim.
