The week ahead in college football

Share

Five things to watch this week in college football.

1. Louisiana State and Alabama get the week off in preparation for their colossal Nov. 5 showdown in Tuscaloosa. CBS, knowing a good “60 Minutes” story line when it sees one, has moved the game into a prime-time, 8 p.m. (Eastern) time slot.

2. Oklahoma plays at Kansas State in a game with national title implications for, of all teams, Kansas State. Oklahoma’s title hopes were damaged Saturday night by a home loss to Texas Tech. Kansas State enters the game undefeated.

3. Clemson and Georgia Tech were both 6-0 a few weeks ago and headed toward an undefeated collision this week in Atlanta. Clemson held up its end by improving to 8-0, but two straight Georgia Tech defeats have taken some of the edge off.

4. ESPN’s “College GameDay” is setting up Lee Corso’s next headdress appearance at the Coliseum in advance of Stanford at USC. The game two years ago produced the now-famous “What’s your deal?” postgame exchange between coaches Pete Carroll and Jim Harbaugh.

5. Penn State is the quietest one-loss team in the nation after posting its seventh win at Northwestern. Joe Paterno picked up victory No. 408, tying Eddie Robinson on the all-time Division I list. If anyone cares, the Nittany Lions host Illinois this week.
