Teams go all out
The Edison High boys’ basketball team will play for a CIF Southern Section championship Saturday but three other local prep teams had their postseason hopes come to an end in two other sports in the past week.
In girls’ basketball, both Huntington Beach and Ocean View were eliminated from title contention during quarterfinal round play Feb. 24.
Huntington was edged at home by Crescenta Valley which rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to upend the Oilers, 51-50, in Division 1AA. Junior guard Kaylyn Nakaji scored a game-high 21 points, junior forward Frankie Wade-Sanchez had 13 points and senior guard Sammy Gray 12 points in the loss.
Crescenta Valley, the No. 2 team from the Pacific League, went on to defeat Chino Hills in Saturday’s semifinals, and will face top-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa for the division title at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Azusa Pacific University.
Huntington, which tied for second-place in the Sunset League, finished 24-7 in what Coach Russ McClurg said was a “very good year.”
“I felt the girls had a lot of improvement and really came together as a team,” he said. “I know they made their family, school and coaches really proud.”
Ocean View’s run in Division 3A came to an end Feb. 24 at Corona del Mar, as the host Sea Kings held on for a 56-50 win.
Junior point guard Jackie Moss scored a team-high 18 points for the Seahawks, which tied for second place in the Golden West League. Senior guard/forward Treasure Robinson had 15 points and eight rounds, and senior guard Sally Morris scored 11 points.
Corona del Mar was bumped from the playoffs after a semifinal loss Saturday to No. 2-seeded La Canada.
“I could not be more proud of this team and their accomplishments,” Ocean View Coach Kim Morris said. “We were on a ‘quest’ this season. We were the ‘heroines’ journeying toward the prize. We faced obstacles and overcame them, and in the end we learned a valuable lesson — it’s all about relationships.”

•In boys’ soccer, Fountain Valley presented top-seeded Paramount with all it could handle in a Division 1 second-round game Feb. 24. The Barons held the host Pirates to a scoreless game through 80 minutes but the host team scored a Golden goal in the first 10-minute overtime to escape with a 1-0 victory.
“Our goalie, Slater Kucera, played well,” Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith said. “He made several, big saves for us to keep us in the game. We had a few opportunities to score that just didn’t find the back of the net.
“I was proud of the way our team played on the road against the No. 1 team. Going into the extra time definitely gave Paramount an advantage having the first round bye and fresher legs.”
San Gabriel Valley League champion Paramount was upset in Friday’s quarterfinal round by Santa Barbara, 3-2. It was only the second loss of the season for the Pirates who finished the year 20-2-3.
The Barons ended the year 15-7-3 overall. They entered the playoffs as the third-place team from the Sunset League.
“We beat some of the top teams in Orange County and played even with the best in the state,” Smith said. “We had a strong season that we are all proud of. We can’t wait to get back to business and prepare for next season.”
