UCLA’s Shabazz Muhammad will be out two to four weeks

UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad is expected to be out two to four weeks because of a strained right shoulder, the school announced Thursday.

Muhammad was injured during practice Wednesday. It is the second injury he has suffered since entering UCLA. Muhammad was sidelined for most of the summer because of a sprained ankle.

Whether Muhammad will be eligible upon his return is still unknown. He has not been cleared to play by the NCAA, which is investigating his eligibility.

Muhammad has been allowed to practice with UCLA, but he can do so only for a 45-day period. That span is believed to have started a few days before the Bruins opened practice Oct. 12, and it won’t pause because of his injury.

UCLA’s season opener is Nov. 9 against Indiana State at Pauley Pavilion. That would mean UCLA’s season could be a couple of weeks old before his clock would run out and Muhammad, were he not cleared, would have to stop participating in team activities.

Investigators are looking into financial assistance Muhammad received from a man his family has said is a longtime friend. They have also asked about money that a financial planner gave to the Las Vegas-based summer team for which Muhammad played.
