Dodgers close in on deal with Bobby Abreu

The Dodgers’ new owners are on the verge of acquiring their first player.

The team is closing in on a deal with former Angels outfielder Bobby Abreu, according to multiple people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because an agreement hadn’t been finalized.

Abreu, who was released by the Angels on Friday, would provide a left-handed bat off the bench and an occasional start in left field, one person said. The 38-year-old could be in uniform on Friday for the beginning of the Dodgers’ series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, another person indicated.

Because Abreu was released, the Dodgers would be obligated to pay him only a prorated share of the major league minimum salary, which is $480,000 annually. The remainder of his $9-million contract would have to be paid by the Angels.

The Dodgers could clear room on their roster by putting Juan Uribe on the disabled list. Uribe reinjured his troublesome left wrist on Tuesday.

Abreu hit 20 home runs as recently as 2010.

Abreu’s production slipped the following season, when he hit .253 with eight home runs and 60 runs batted in for the Angels

The Angels’ addition of Albert Pujols and the return of Kendrys Morales relegated Abreu to a bit role this season. He played in eight games before he was released to clear room for top prospect Mike Trout.

Abreu has made two All-Star teams over his 17-year career, which included stints with the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees.

The Venezuela native is one of only four players in major league history with at least 500 doubles, 250 home runs and 350 stolen bases. The others: Barry Bonds, Rickey Henderson and Craig Biggio.

Kemp honored

Matt Kemp was the National League’s player of the month in April, the first time he received such an award.

Kemp led the majors in batting average (.412) and home runs (12) in the month. He also topped the National League in runs batted in (25), hits (35), runs (24) and slugging percentage (.893).

His April home-run total was fifth most in history behind only Pujols (14, 2006), Alex Rodriguez (14, 2007), Luis Gonzalez (13, 2001) and Ken Griffey Jr. (13, 1997).

Uribe to the DL?

Third baseman Uribe could land on the disabled list if his injured left wrist doesn’t improve during the Dodgers’ day off Thursday, Manager Don Mattingly said.

Uribe reinjured the wrist in batting practice Tuesday and received a cortisone injection. A related injury cost him five games earlier this season.

Uribe acknowledged that his wrist hurt more on Tuesday than it did two weeks ago but didn’t think a trip to the disabled list would be necessary.
