Teams aren’t the only ones scouting

Share

After having been scouted for months, even years, two new Green Bay Packers turned the tables on the pros shortly after they were drafted in the first round.

Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji and USC linebacker Clay Matthews were chosen ninth and 26th, respectively, by Green Bay -- selections that prompted them to rush to the computer to do some fact-finding about their new environs.

Raji told the Associated Press last week that after being drafted by the Packers, he was “still in shock” for the rest of the day. Less than 24 hours later, he “actually went on Wikipedia, looked up Green Bay to see what it was like, found some interesting facts about it, so it was good.” Added Matthews: “I did the same thing. First I looked where Green Bay was on the map, to find out where I would be for the next couple years. After that, I went to Wikipedia, started looking at the coaches, looking at their backgrounds and whatnot, just finding ways to familiarize myself with the team so when I came in here, it wasn’t such a shock. It is [a shock], obviously, but I think we’re that much more prepared.”

Trivia time

Only one pitcher has won the seventh game in two World Series. Who is he?

Painful payday

He has written two books that fanned the flames of baseball’s steroids controversy, appeared on two reality shows and endured “celebrity” boxing matches against Danny Bonaduce and Vai Sikahema. What could possibly be next for Jose (I Need the Money) Canseco?

Would you believe a mixed martial arts bout against a 7-foot-2, 330-pound opponent?

On May 26, Canseco will oppose massive South Korean Hong Man Choi on the Dream 9 card in Yokohama Arena. Choi has a 1-2 record in MMA but is expected to be at .500 very soon.

“I have no idea if I can do it,” Canseco said Thursday night. “It’s a tough sport.”

And they do it on skates

Who are better athletes, baseball players or hockey players?

Ozzie Guillen, manager of the Chicago White Sox, says it is no contest.

“You won’t see any fat boys in hockey,” Guillen told MLB.com. “And in hockey, you want to fight, let’s go fight. You get a two-minute penalty. In baseball, you get a 10-day suspension.”

Trivia answer

Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals won the seventh game in 1964 against the New York Yankees and in 1967 against the Boston Red Sox. And he lost the seventh game to the Detroit Tigers in 1968.

And finally

From Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News: “When Phil Jackson said he’d pick Dwight Howard over Kobe or LeBron if he were starting a team he was talking about a basketball team, right?”
