Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dons Darth Vader mask for Katherine Webb photo

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Katherine Webb were hanging out poolside the other day, you know, just waiting for their turns on the high dive. Naturally, the Lakers legend was wearing a Darth Vader mask and ...

Huh? You mean there’s something unusual about the NBA’s all-time leading scorer dressed like a “Star Wars” character spending time at the pool with a beauty queen/Sports Illustrated swimsuit model/”Inside Edition” Super Bowl correspondent/girlfriend of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron?

Well, then, I guess it’s a good thing there was someone around with a camera to capture the momentous occasion and that Abdul-Jabbar was kind enough to tweet the photo for the world to see. The photo has since been removed from his Twitter page, presumably out of respect for late Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who died Monday.

Actually, there’s a perfectly good explanation for all of this. Abdul-Jabbar and Webb are two of the 10 participants in the upcoming ABC reality show “Splash,” in which celebrities are coached by diving legend Greg Louganis to perform a variety of high dives.

The show, which debuts next month, already made headlines earlier this year when Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh saved comedian Louie Anderson, a fellow contestant, from drowning during taping.

See, it all fits together -- Abdul-Jabbar, Webb, the pool, the high dive. Which brings us to the Darth Vader mask.

Um, yeah, about that ... maybe there’s not a perfectly good explanation for all of this.
