Pat Gibbs converted two free throws in the waning seconds Tuesday night to lift Cal Lutheran to a 53-52 victory at Point Loma in the NAIA District 3 opener for both teams and end a six-game losing streak.

Center Steve Cotner, who finished with 16 points, sank a pair of free throws to give the Kingsmen, 5-14, a 51-50 lead with 1:12 left. But Deon Richard grabbed an offensive rebound at the other end and his ensuing layin put the Crusaders ahead, 52-51, with just 38 seconds left.

Erik Slattum led Lutheran with nine rebounds and Gibbs, the team’s leading scorer this season, finished with 12 points. Richard scored a game-high 22 points for Point Loma, which dropped to 12-4.
