Designer Defense Works for Carlsbad High in 65-49 Win

The Carlsbad High School boys basketball team used a fast break and strong defense to beat El Camino, 65-49, in an Avocado League game at Carlsbad High Thursday.

“Our defense is designed to keep teams under 50,” Carlsbad Coach Scott Wright said. “If we can do that, we’ll win.”

The Carlsbad defense shut out El Camino’s biggest scoring threat, Ken Crawford, in the second half. Crawford scored eight points in the first half.

Ricky White led Carlsbad (2-0 in league, 8-4 overall) with 23 points. Tim Smith added 17 and Robert McGrew had 10. Randy Hale led the Wildcats (1-1, 10-2) with 14 points and Kevin Taylor added 10. Carlsbad led, 27-20, at halftime.

In other Avocado League acton:

Ramona 61, San Pasqual 50--Ramona outscored San Pasqual, 15-4, in the third quarter to break open a close game at Ramona High. Stan Clancy led Ramona (1-0, 7-4) with 14 points and Robert Cronic added 13. Tom Noonon scored 22 points in a losing effort for San Pasqual (0-2, 8-7) and Rich Prusinski added 12 points.

Oceanside 39, San Marcos 35--The defending San Diego 2-A Conference champions remained unbeaten in league play with the win at Oceanside High. The Pirates improved their record to 2-0, 8-4. San Marcos dropped to 0-2, 3-8.
